Thanks for the information about lending a boar, hutches and when to breed a sow.
I have two, two and a half year old female guinea pigs and a few months ago I got a young female and male and now the female is pregnant, shes 5 months old now and about 3 weeks into her pregnancy.
I'm 13 and I know a lot about guinea pigs and all about roans and dalmations and the problems with breeding so hopefully everything should go well.
I got a new 3 storey hutch so plenty of room as we will be keeping the babies. Also I am interested in entering my two older females into one of your shows, they are pure breeds, a golden agouti and a tortoise shell and white. Anything I need to now before doing so?
Thank you very much,
Emma

ANSWERS.

SOWS SHOULD HAVE THERE FIRST LITTER BETWEEN 6 MONTHS AND 12 MONTHS, IF LATER IT CAN CAUSE PROBLEMS WHEN GIVING BIRTH, SO BEST AVOIDED.

Sep 27 2009 10:56 pm
IF YOU STILL WANT SECOND HAND HUTCHES LET ME KNOW.

I DON`T KNOW OF ANY ONE WHO WOULD LET YOU BORROW A BOAR, IT MAY BE MORE LIKELY WHEN YOU GET TO KNOW MORE PEOPLE IN THE FANCY.

DO YOU MEAN LICE OR MITES. LICE YOU CAN SEE WRIGGLING ABOUT IN THE FUR. SPRAY WITH A ANTI LICE SPRAY OR SHAMPOO.
MITES YOU CANNOT SEE BUT THEY CAUSE SCRATCHING AND SORES, THIS NEED TO BE TRATED WITH IVOMEC.

Jul 18 2009 06:56 pm
Do you know anyone who is selling second hand guinea pig hutches at low price because I want to breed my sow guinea pigs and I will need another hutch to accommdate all of them.

Jul 18 2009 06:54 pm
Hello, do you or anyone you know lend boar guinea pigs to people who have sows and want to breed from them?

Jul 18 2009 03:18 pm
I have a two and 1/4 year old sow, which I would like to breed from. Is she too old?

Jul 16 2009 04:36 pm
hi my sow guinea seems to always have a mild case of mites,it's strange as she has never passed them on to my other sow guinea pigs, she is o.k when i get her ready for show they seem to disapear but they have known to return on the day of the show it sad as she i cant take her to show i have never took a guinea that has mites on there fur, should i spray her more regularly to keep on top of the mild case of mites?

Hello

I am looking for two (not a breeding pair) cavies. I don't know much about them other than that a pair are happier and that pet shops are not always the best place to buy them.

I have read lots of helpful hints about   cage size, diete and care on your and various linked sites.

So does anyone have anything suitable for sale?

I don't think we want anything too fancy - they will be for family pets. Ideally, they will be used to handling as they are for our small daughter; although she looks after our chickens without and handles them well without much mishap, I wouldn't want her to have something that was unahppy with being handled.

ANSWER.

I will answer the last three queries   all together.

Standard are what the purebreed guinea pig(Cavy)are judged by. Each breed has a diffrent standard. If you go onto a particular breeds web site you will find there standard, or you can buy a standards book from the British Cavy Council, again find there website.
..........................................

Intermediate means a cavy aged between 5 months and 8 months, so stock of this age would be entered in this show.
.........................................

All specalist   clubs have stock shows for there particular breed, a mini stock show would be basic show for the breeed where you are able to win points in the annual points shows.
........................................
The way to enter any guinea pigs for shows is to contact the Secretary of the club you wish to visit and they will explain everything to you.

The Cavy fancy is following new hygine guidelines.
And the first of these should be to stop anyone showing or selling stock that is not 100% well or coming from a stud where   there are ill pigs.
If any one brings a sick Pig to our show they will be banned from future showing, simple.

Hi . No problem with the questions   we are here to help.

You cannot enter pigs in the pet classses as well as the open. Usually the pet section has xbred pigs in but you can enter any pig in this section, Open classes are only for purebred   animals and is an entirely seperate show.

Yes juveniles can enter there purebred pig in open classes, put open   breed number   first, then on the same line the juvenile breeed class number.

If you need any more help with this, please get in touch. Margaret.

You have been given the wrong information i`m afraid, boars need not be litter brothers, to live a happy life together, in fact they are individuals , some are very placid, some never settle with another boar.
Buy two as near to 8 weeks as you can, no younger, never let them get a sniff of other guinea pigs and keep them together all the time and you should be ok.
If you need to introduce a baby boar to another boar, again this should cause no problem a long as he is about 8 weeks,
put them into a neutral hutch, spread a little vick or similar around hutch and on pigs, give them some favorite foods, they will mount and accasionaly pick at each other, this is not fighting.
But if a serious fight does break out they must be seperated they can cause serious damage to each other.

___________

My son has been given a baby boar for Xmas and i am wondering if he will get lonely, but on enquiring was told you cannot put two boys together if they are not brothers, what is your opinion on this, and where can i get another baby if it is ok.

Nov 20 2006 11:32 pm
ANSWER.

Lots of people feed horse mix, with and without Mollases.

The horse mix is ok for pigs, and they do like mollashed food, no problems with that.
But i would not give horse food as the only dry food, use it to bulk up Guinea Pig food, and do not get ones with   to high a protein content or a working horse feed, especially if you are breeding, it could make them to fat.
Also the vitamin C content should be checked, they need a good supply of vitamin C in there diet and some horse feeds have a very low amount or non.
You can use Rabbit foord again to bulk up the Guinea food, but check that it has no additives.

Nov 20 2006 09:56 pm
Hi
I am thinking of feeding my guineas on a horse mix as a lot of people have said they feed them on horse mix, is it ok to feed them on this and what about the malasses surely thats not good for them.

thanks kerrie

I   expect you will get diffrent opinions on this one, but here is my personal one.

I would never heat the shed unless it was sub zero temps, reasons being are as follows.

You do not need to, guinea pigs are fine in the cold as long as they are dry, damp free, draft free, have plenty of hay and are fed well.

It can cause a build up of condensation and damp which is harmfull.

It could be a fire hazzard.

Its best to keep the shed well ventolated, so there would be little point in having heating.

I only shut the doors and window in the winter at night and if its really bad weather in the day.

Hope this helps.

ANSWER.......

I`m afraid that secetaries are not obliged to change any mistakes that an exhibitor has made on the entry form or by bringing the wrong pig to the show.
When you enter your pig in a show it involves a lot of paperwork that needs to be completed   before the day of the show, this includes recording the entry and puttin it through all the classes.   listing the exhibitors.   writing the prize cards and calculating all the entry fees and prize money.
If a sec is asked to change this on show day it can cause a lot of confusion and waste of materials and money, so its best not to expect it, even   after the closing date to be honest its to late.

Sep 12 2006 10:27 am
Question..........

Just a general enquiry, about clubs in general.

I entered a show last saturday , when i got there i realised i had bought the wrong pig, but the secritary would not change my pig to another class because he said it would take to much work.
I was a bit miffed, it did not look to hard to me to change it over, it was the same breeed diffrent age and sex. What do you think. He did not give me the entry money back either.

Sep 3 2006 10:40 pm
If you would like the schedule you can email me or down load from this site, the entry must be with me a week before the show, there is a lot of peperwork involved so late entries are not encouraged.
If you have any difficulty with the entry form do not hesitate to get in touch.

Its best to arrive at the show at least half hour before the show starts, 10.30 to give yourself time to pen your pigs.
Get in touch if you need more help.

ANSWER.

Remove baby boars at 4   weeks, baby sows can stay with mum as long as you like as long as she is tolerating them and they are not wearing her out.

Best not to sell before 8 weeks old and then only if they are a good size, its not fair on them to be sold at to young an age, make sure sows   have been away from there mum for a week at least if you intend to sell them at 8 weeks.

Always sell boars in pairs, not more they can get a bit over stimulated if more.

Hi Tanya.   No you not have to be a member to enter, but if you do join you will   receive the schedule for each show and you would be able to win trophies   and cups at the annual   Trophy show, also your pigs would go into the members points competition, the winners of this hold the points plaque for the year.
Membership fees are on the site.

When you see points shows advertized for example the English Self Cavy Club(E.S.C.C.) it means if you are a member of this club you can enter your pigs in this show and if you manage to gain 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in the breed class you points will go   into the annual points comp, determaning who has the best of the breeds for the year. Look on the clubs web sites for more imfo.

Where can i buy some guinea pigs for pets where i can get reliable imformation on sexing, feeding and care. I do not want to go to pet shops as the last time i finished up with 8 pigs instead of two, they were both pregnant.

Jun 13 2006 12:21 am
ANSWER.
Sorry you lost the babies, these things do happen, if you ever have this problem again take the babies indoors and hold in a bowl of warm water supporting the head out of the water, and gently massage the baby, and clean the membrain from the fur, if the cord is still there being very carefull not to pull it nip it off with a clean pair of scissors, keep the baby in the   water making sure it is nice and warm, when it starts to struggle and seem brighter, get it onto a warm towel and gently rub dry, keep it with you for a while, massaging and gently moving it, the main thing is to keep it warm. If its warm in the hutch and the baby is completly dry and lively put it back with the mum, if not bring the family indoors to a warm, quiet place. You do not have to worry about the babies feeding as they do not need to do so for a few hours.
